It's not over until the hat lady blogs

Woop! What a glorious Bank Holiday weekend! I'm starting a temp job tomorrow for a couple of weeks, so I thought I'd help us all to avoid that Sunday Night Feeling / The Fear with an evening blog post to ease us all into the week ahead. Traditionally, I'm supposed to make winter hats in summer and summer hats in winter. However, just in case this is The Summer (we still haven't forgiven you 2012...) for the past fortnight I have mainly been sewing in sunglasses, which does not encourage the use of felt and wool and tweed. As a result, this weeks' blog features straws and sinamay in rainbow brights...

Berry Straw

I spent last weekend in London with Rose, learning how to work with straw. It's a tricky business, especially with a wider weave straw cone - one wrong move and the entire thing starts to fray, then unravel, before gently falling to pieces in your very hands! Nonetheless, you can't beat a straw in summer (I'm keeping the pink one!) and it's another millinery skill mastered... Needless to say the next few posts may feature A Lot of straw ;)

After spending an age invisibly hand sewing this orange velvet to the remainder of the straw cone over the weekend, I then found this butter soft leather on Goldhawk Road...

The beret will now be rocking a bright orange oversized leather bow, and the straw / velvet tube will adorn a future creation! It was no contest really...

Order . Order !

My latest commission is "Strawberries and Cream" in blue and pink - the client fell in love with the original but had already got her outfit, so we adapted! Here it is all packed up and ready for new adventures.

And finally. . .

In other exciting news, my Facebook page has received over 100 likes!! Thanks again to everyone for the support - it's greatly appreciated!

I'll be back from the Real World in a fortnight - in the meantime, a visit to Handmade Monday will surely put off the inevitable inconvenience of the working week. See you next time my dears!

I love the pink straw hat, but my favourite is the trilby style one. I love the rakish angle of it. Fabulous. I also love the felt rose (naturally), especially the colour.
Enjoy the temp job, and see you soon. xx

It's a happy hat isn't it, very couture dahling! ;) I'm still plotting something suitably couture-y to dress it, it's trickier than I thought! I thought you might approve of the rose ;) x

The yellow rose at is gorgeous, but my favourite one is the pink. Even without any additional decoration it's lovely. It wouldn't stay on my head, but I could look at it lovingly!
I hope the temp job is going okay.

Ha! You'd be surprised what a piece of well placed elastic can do! ;) Temping is fine if not a little inconvenient hatting-wise - I still haven't got the bow onto the pink one yet! >_< I'm back off up to the studio in a moment so that i've got something to show for next week's Handmade Monday!

What great looking hats. I love that colour pink. I can imagine that straw is tricky to work with but you've done it proud with your creations.
